Related to: Family Travel • Budget Travel • Hiking and Walking St.Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church this church is one of the main reason of visiting Gulf shores. Father Paul serves only on Sundays at 10am.They also have Sunday school and all Orthodox Christians and visitors are very welcome to join even for a short vacation time. This Greek church is like a little piece of Greece in AL.Nice people there, very welcoming!Although we couldn't stay there for service on Sunday, and father was out of town, he arranged it the way the founders of the church opened it for us on Saturday and let us put the candles and showed around, which is highly appreciated! Related to: Family Travel • Budget Travel • Religious Travel Home of Animal planet's The little zoo that could" The most amazing small zoo I've ever visited! It's small indeed, but has 2 tigers ,one of which is white Bengal (very rare thing in animal world)! They have a rescued pelican, who can hardly move,an American alligator :who used to live in national park and steal people's lunch baskets, but was brought to the zoo to save the whole situations and they accepted him. They also have birds-a lot of them ;and a star is a white cockatoo (see video) who dances like a pop-star and if you don't pay attention, screams his head off!!! The shop is very neat too, they sell a foto albums and frames made out of elephant's poo,and when you buy it a % from sale goes to help elephants. They eat a lot and need your help!! Album is good and doesn't smell at all,but fiber for it is made from yes..you got it! They have also lamas, donkeys, swans, lemurs,Patagonian cavy and another amazing creatures.Right next to the exit there is another cockatoo who says 'hello there',which is very funny! zoo doesn't give any discounts to the members of another zoos, but you can look for coupons at the hotel booklets, nearby restaurant "Doc's sea food shack" they give you 1$ off after eating there.very nice seafood BTW! Related to: Budget Travel • Zoo • Family Travel Relax on the beach Find a beach - we used one of the public access parking areas - and spend an hour or more just sitting in the sand. Bring sand chairs, umbrellas, and water. If you're at a hotel, these can be rented, if you don't want to carry them. Related to: Beaches • Romantic Travel and Honeymoons Fort Morgan Just down the road from Gulf Shores is historic Fort Morgan. Fort Morgan was established in 1834 at the mouth of Mobile Bay. The fort was named for Revolutionary War hero Daniel Morgan. Many regard Fort Morgan as one of the "finest examples of military architecture in the New World." Fort Morgan is at the tip of Mobile Point at the western end of Alabama Highway 180. It and Dauphin Island, on which Fort Gaines is situated, enclose Mobile Bay. The Alabama Historical Commission maintains the site. The fort was very interesting to tour. There is a checkpoint along the entrance road where you will stop and pay the entrance fee of $5 per adult. Stop at the museum across from the entrance to the fort to check out the displays and to get a brochure that guides you through the fort and explains what you are seeing. Hours are 8 AM to 7 PM April through October and 8 AM to 5 PM November through March. The museum is open 9 AM to 5 PM. Related to: Architecture • Road Trip • Historical Travel Gulf State Park Gulf State Park is located in Gulf Shores and consists of 6150 acres located in the city of Gulf Shores on the gulf coast of Alabama. It boasts 2 miles of beautiful beaches with fine white sand, surf to play in, lots of sun to enjoy, seagulls to watch and shells to collect, and lots of other activities. Gulf State Park has modern and primitive camping, cottages, trails and fishing from the new fishing pier. There is also tennis, group pavilions, an 18-hole golf course, a 900 acre lake for fishing, swimming, and water skiing, nature programs and picnic areas. There is even free Wi-fi at the activity center in the campground. Hours are 7 AM to sundown for the day-use areas and the fishing pier is open 24 hours/7 days a week. Admission to the fishing pier is $2. For more information and photos see my Gulf State Park Page. Related to: Road Trip • National/State Park • Beaches Mobile -Nice City with a lot to see This is on Dauphin Island and easy to get to. The trip is worth it just to get the view from the fort. It was still in use in WW II with gun batteries ready to take action in case of attack in the South. The Alabama battleship was one of the most impressive I have ever been on. Fee is around $!0 and the area is a museum of WWI other aircraft and tanks. The other real neat feature is the submarine USS Drum, which is 311 feet long. YOu get to wander and drawl around in both of these and it is really an adventure to hold. Related to: Historical Travel • Museum Visits • Arts and Culture Fort Conde An impressive replica fort built originally in the 18th century by the French. It opened in 1976 and has a museum underground displaying the attire during that era for military uniforms and weapons and other items for the period. It is just right in the downtown area on 11 acres, and a nice tour Related to: Historical Travel • Museum Visits • Architecture Fort Morgan was the king Located on Dauphin Island, it was a fort even used until the latest WWII as border defenses. Built between 1819-1834, it was to defend at the time as a result of British war just ended. The battery Duportail was one that was added and used for defense 1899-1923. Guns fired 1,000 pound shells 8 1/2 miles. The fort was known for the Admiral Farragut attack in Civil War to take over Mobile Bay and the area, using ironsides for the first time here. Related to: Museum Visits • Archeology • Historical Travel Bellingrath Gardens Maybe the most beautiful garden setting in the South. You can spend a full day touring the home and the gardens. it was created by Tom Bellingrath, an executive of Coca Cola in early 1900's. He and the wife continued to expand and develop the back acreage until it is now a very large expanse with much beauty. Plan to see it when it is in full bloom. The home tour is also great. For all you travlers out there goingto gulf shores i have found an awsome salon. It is so nerve racking to get haircuts when you are out of town but the girls at sea breeze beauty salon do awsome work. we come to gulf shores once a year and i will go to this salon every time. So for all you ladies and all you men who didnt have time to get a haircut before you left home you will feel so welcome with these girls not to mention a great haircut. I have their card and the telephone # is-251-968-7134. Have a great vacation!!!!!! Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola Navy Base complete history of naval aviation. actual planes are in the museum. aircraft carrier mock-up. Blue angels atrium with a formation of the real jets suspended overhead. Walking the beach! Kick off your shoes or sandals, feel the smooth sand under your feet, watch the sandpipers run around crazily like little cartoon characters in dizzying circles and loops leaving fascinating designs in the wet sand with their feet, look for shells at low tide, catch sandcrabs as they scurry for cover. I felt like I shed years and a load of life-worries as I walked with my friend (now my husband!), taking it all in, breathing the fresh breeze....mmmmmmmm! One other thing I enjoyed so much that also made it unique for me was the wildlife we saw....most not shy at all! This is a picture of a heron that seemed to almost want his picture taken! He had no fear as I slowly approached him. There were also many pelican and various other unidentifiable seabirds. I really enjoyed all of it. Go to the Beach on the Gulf of Mexico One of the attractions in Gulf Shores are the clean white sand beaches along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
